Preparing Florida’s Schools for the Aerospace Industry

Challenger Learning Center Teacher Workshops

The Challenger Learning Center of the Florida A&M University – Florida State University College of Engineering conducted two teacher workshops on February 16, 2001, and June 6, 2001 that focused on content knowledge of teachers, thereby increasing their competence and confidence in the areas of math, science, technology and engineering. These workshops along with a mentoring program were funded by the Florida Space Grant Consortium and the Challenger Learning Center. 25 teachers from Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla and Jefferson counties attended the workshop.

In addition, sixteen mentors spent a total of 700 hours in eight schools in Leon and Gadsen County. Thirteen of the mentors worked in a one-to-one setting with forty three students. Two of the mentors worked with classroom teachers assisting any student that needed help during a lesson. One of the mentors worked with an after school program of students helping them to build solar caps.
