Aviation Experience was hosted by Barrington Irvine, the first African American to have flown solo around the world. On the day, Barrington flew a small two-seater plane, which he had constructed in conglomeration with local high school students in just 10 weeks, over the skies of South Florida. The event was also a career fair for Miami students in which they got a chance to meet with representatives from state and national agencies and commercial businesses. Over one hundred students were in attendance.
FSGC attended the event not only to increase the strength of our public profile in South Florida but also to begin the process of formulating summer science academies that will be held in the Miami area. Miami is such a large city and FSGC is intent on increasing our access to the city’s student population. Barrington Irvine’s project has clearly generated an aura of excitement and enthusiasm amongst the community about aviation, aeronautics, and aerospace. FSGC seeks to sustain this fervent youthfull interest in the sciences by making access to our programs easier for students in South Florida.
